Google launches AI search with new features and global availability

November 14, 2023 Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE), an AI-infused enhancement to its search engine, is set for a significant expansion in both features and global availability. Launched in May and initially available through Search Labs for user testing, the SGE is now introducing more advanced capabilities and reaching a wider audience.

The new features include an improved method for users to ask follow-up questions directly from the search results page. This enhancement addresses user feedback indicating a preference for exploring topics through sequential queries. Users can now input their follow-up questions in designated fields within the search results, simplifying the process of gaining deeper insights into their queries.

Another notable advancement is in AI-powered translation. Recognizing the challenges posed by words with multiple meanings, Google’s generative AI now offers a more nuanced translation experience. Words with potential for ambiguity will be underlined, allowing users to select the specific meaning they intend, thereby enhancing the accuracy of translations. Initially, this feature will be available for English-to-Spanish translations in the U.S., with plans to extend it to more countries and languages.

In terms of accessibility, Google has expanded the SGE to include four new languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, and Indonesian. Additionally, the service has been launched in over 120 new countries and territories, significantly broadening its global reach.

Lastly, the SGE will soon provide interactive definitions in AI-powered overviews for searches related to coding and health information. This feature, rolling out over the next month for U.S. English users, will highlight certain terms in search results, offering users the option to hover over them for comprehensive definitions.

These updates mark a substantial step in Google’s ongoing efforts to refine and expand its AI-powered search capabilities, making information retrieval more intuitive, accurate, and accessible to a global audience.
