Google is making passkeys the preferred login setting for Google accounts. Passkeys are a more secure and convenient way to sign in to websites and apps, and they’re powered by your device’s built-in authentication methods, such as fingerprint sensors, PINs, and Face ID.
To use a passkey, simply create one on your device and then scan a QR code or tap a link on the website or app you’re trying to log in to. Your device will then verify your identity using its built-in authentication method, and you’ll be logged in.
Google says that passkeys are 40% faster than passwords, and they’re also more secure because they’re not vulnerable to phishing attacks or password leaks. In fact, Google believes that passkeys are the future of online security, and it’s working with other companies to make them the standard way to log in to websites and apps.
“We’ve found that one of the most immediate benefits of passkeys is that they spare people the headache of remembering all those numbers and special characters in passwords. They’re also phishing resistant,” Google said in a blogpost.
