Google To Allow Spotify Use Its Own Payment System

March 24, 2022

Google will allow music streaming platform, Spotify to use its own payment system in the Google Play Store app.

This means users who downloaded Spotify from Google Play Store will now have the choice of either paying with Spotify’s payment system or with Google Play Billing.

“This pilot will help us to increase our understanding of whether and how user choice billing works for users in different countries and developers of different sizes and categories,” Google said in a blog post.

The move from Google is part of a new pilot that seeks to address app makers’ complaints about high fees. It will also address the company’s alleged anticompetitive behavior.

Over the years, app developers have lodged several complaints about the compulsory use of Google and Apple’s payment platforms.

They also issued several complaints on the exorbitant fees charged by each payment system. Google and Apple collect up to 30% of each payment as a fee.
