Google Uses AI To Improve Maps, Unveils New Features

May 12, 2022

Google is using AI to improve Maps. The project has been able to create a rich “immersive view” of the world using computer vision and other forms of AI.

Other new features include eco-friendly routing and the Live View feature.

The new immersive view feature will work on most phones and devices. It will give users a detailed, close-up look at places, including indoor locations (restaurants or event venues).

According to Google, the new immersive feature will start rolling out in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo later this year.

Eco-friendly routing options will be added to Google Flights. The feature helps users find eco-friendly routes for driving in Maps. This, therefore, shows users routes that require them to use the least amount of carbon emissions.

Users searching for flights will be able to find carbon estimates next to other information like price and schedule. The eco-friendly feature routing was launched in Maps last year in the U.S. and Canada and since then, people have used it for traveling 86 billion miles.

The Live View feature helps users find their way around places using AR to display arrows and directions.
