Google will tap Samsung Electronics to supply the 5G modem for its next flagship Pixel smartphone signalling the first victory for the Korean company in a U.S. market ruled by Qualcomm Inc, according to Reuters.

For a long time, Qualcomm was one of the few companies in the world capable of producing 5G modems that connect devices to wireless data networks partly because the company leads in a variant of 5G networking called millimeter wave.

However, Samsung stated that its new modem technology is capable of connecting millimeter waves – a major development that Google wants to bring to its new phones.

According to Kevin Krewell, principal analyst at TIRIAS Research, Samsung’s win over Google will likely be the company’s first major opportunity to make its chip manufacturing capabilities known to the broader phone industry, as it has never sold its 5G modem chip technology to an outside company.
