Cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab warned that fraudsters and cybercriminals are using the highly anticipated Marvel superhero film “Black Widow” as a decoy to enrich themselves with observer’s credit card information and commit other cybercrimes.
Disney will screen the film on its Disney+ platform and in theaters.
Kaspersky said that the film, which has had an earlier release date in 2020, has so far seen spikes in phishing attempts and malicious downloads.
According to Kaspersky’s findings, it is a common tactic of cybercriminals to show the first few minutes of the film before asking users to register with various login credentials such as name, city, zip code and credit card information in order to continue watching the film, which ultimately does not happen.
Fraudsters are also trying to sell faulty files as downloads of the movie.
Kaspersky advises against opening files with extensions such as .EXE or .MSI.
