High-capacity HDDs provide excellent storage and reliability, says Backblaze

February 13, 2023

According to a recent Backblaze report, high-capacity hard disk drives (HDDs) are proving to be both reliable and excellent storage options. The report compared the reliability and storage capacity of hard disk drives (HDDs) to that of solid-state drives (SSDs), concluding that HDDs are still an excellent choice for those seeking large amounts of storage at a low cost.

According to the report, HDDs with capacities of 8TB or higher had an average annual failure rate of only 1.6%, making them a dependable option for storing large amounts of data. Furthermore, the cost of HDDs per terabyte of storage is still significantly lower than that of SSDs, making them an appealing option for those seeking a cost-effective solution. That is, Hard Disk Drives (HDD) are essential for storing data in a variety of market sectors because Solid State Drives (SSDs), which store everything in flash memory, are insufficient.

The report did note, however, that HDDs are slower than SSDs or are not suitable for use in high-performance applications. But it did note that the difference in speed between the two technologies is due to the fact that SSDs have no moving parts, whereas HDDs have spinning disks, which can cause performance lag.

According to the report, HDDs with capacities of 8TB or greater had an average annual failure rate of 1.6%. HDDs are also less expensive per terabyte of storage than SSDs. However, due to the presence of spinning disks in HDDs, which can cause performance lag, the report stated that HDDs are not as fast as SSDs and are not suitable for use in high-performance applications.
