How to overcome the challenge of on job training in remote work

February 13, 2023

Remote work has grown in popularity in recent years, but it comes with its own set of challenges, such as how hybrid and remote work undermine on-the-job training and employee integration by forcing employees to return to the office.

Dr. Gleb Tsipursky, a Forbes writer, believes that senior leadership and management must adopt best practices for leading hybrid and remote teams in order to mentor employees in the future of work. As a result, his Forbes article says: “To address the problem of integrating junior employees in remote and hybrid settings requires an effective structured mentoring program. You need to pair up senior staff members with junior staff members for virtual mentoring sessions.”

He adds that a senior staff member from the person’s own team should meet with their mentee monthly in a brief 20-30 minute meeting and ask a few questions such as how they did on the topics discussed the previous time, how confident they feel in their ability to do individual tasks, and what would make them feel more confident, what kind of obstacles do they see in doing their individual tasks effectively, and a host of others.

Mentors should also co-work with each of their mentees for at least an hour each week to facilitate on-the-job learning through virtual settings. That entails the mentor and mentee joining a videoconference call and then working on their own tasks while being able to ask questions if they arise. After all, much of on-the-job training is provided by coworkers answering questions and demonstrating what to do on individual tasks in the moment.
