President Biden’s nominee to be the United States Under Secretary for Industry and Security has reaffirmed his plans to keep Huawei under the trade blacklist radar for as long as possible.

Alan Estevez said it would remain under the radar of the blacklist unless “things change” stating that the company poses a threat to national security.

He noted further that he would “look at” Honor Device, a handset spun off from Huawei, to see if Huawei is using the spin-off brand to reduce or circumvent its own blacklist situation.

Estevez noted while testifying at a hearing of the Senate banking committee, “I’ve seen previous maneuvers by the Chinese. It’s something I’ll have to look at when I get to the department, should I be confirmed. I do not have the information in front of me that would give me the full picture on that.”

While the government is still considering blacklisting Honor after lawmakers raised concerns about the firm, Huawei reiterated its initial statement that it would not hold shares or participate in any business activities of the new company.
