IEEE Reveals Top Programming Languages in 2021

September 2, 2021

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) declared Python the most popular programming language among engineers in its Spectrum Language Ranking 2021. Other languages in the top ten included Java, C, C++, JavaScript, C#, R, Go, HTML and Swift.

The IEEE Spectrum ranking, which serves as one of the many measures that reveal which programming language is worth learning, found that Python came out on top given the language’s relative simplicity to learn and because of a healthy ecosystem of libraries.

IEEE Spectrum’s ranking explained, “You don’t have to become a dyed-in-the-wool Pythonista, but learning the language well enough to use one of the vast numbers of libraries written for it is probably worth your time.”

While Python ranks at the top of other programming languages, it also has some flaws, some of which include the fact that it is not as fast as C, it has no place in mobile app development, and it is surpassed by JavaScript and Microsoft’s TypeScript when it comes to developing front-end websites.
