India Gives Twitter One Last Chance To Comply With IT Rules

June 7, 2021

According to an official letter obtained by Reuters, India has told Twitter Inc. that it has one last chance to comply with the new IT rules, or face consequences.

The new rules, which came into force at the end of May, aim to regulate content on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Twitter.

In late May, India’s Technology Minister wrote to Twitter about the new rules, but received no response that clarified compliance.

A letter seen by Reuters said failure to comply would lead to “unintended consequences,” including the possibility that Twitter could be held accountable for published content.

The new rules have led to legal battles, including a lawsuit by WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook.
