Italy Data Authority Seek Clarity On Facebook SmartGlasses

September 13, 2021

The Italian data protection authority Garante has asked Facebook to clarify its newly introduced smart glasses.

The inquiry comes amid efforts to determine whether the product complies with data protection laws.

The Commission stressed that it wanted to be informed of measures taken by Facebook to protect people filmed, particularly children, and also requested information on the systems put in place to anonymise data collection alongside the voice assistant connected to the glasses.

In response to the update, which came from the Italian Data Protection Authority, a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement: “We know people have questions about new technologies, so before the launch of Ray-Ban Stories we engaged with the Irish DPC to share how we’ve built privacy into the product design and functionality of the glasses to give both device owners and people around them peace of mind. We’ll answer questions from Garante through the Irish DPC and we look forward to our continued collaboration with regulators in Europe.”
