Lakehead school board asks Reddit to unmask anonymous users

November 3, 2023

The Lakehead District School Board in Thunder Bay, Ontario, is suing Reddit Canada to identify two anonymous users who have made posts that the board says are defamatory.

The school board filed a court order on September 14, demanding that Reddit Canada disclose the users’ names, email addresses, IP addresses, and other identifying information. The order also compels Reddit Canada to remove the posts from the platform.

According to the order application, the posts made earlier this year allege that the school board is corrupt and that its director, Sherri-lyn Pharrand, has created new management positions for her friends and cronies. The posts also claim that Pharrand canceled all weekend school rentals in order to save money for upper management.

The school board argues that the posts are defamatory and that they have caused it reputational damage. It also argues that it is unable to identify the users who made the posts on its own and that Reddit Canada is the only entity that can provide this information.

Reddit Canada has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
