LG Chem Makes Plastic Outer Layer For Foldable Displays

September 8, 2021

On Tuesday, LG Chem announced that it has developed a new cover window, a protective film that is used to protect foldable displays from external damage.

According to LG Chem, the new cover window, called Real Folding Glass, is made of a specially developed material that is applied to the suView Postrface of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film, a type of plastic to make it hard like glass but still flexible.

The coating material attached to the PET film on both sides, with a thickness of several tens of micrometres, helps to improve the heat resistance and mechanical properties of the film.

The new material will be available for mass production in 2023.

LG Chem said that its new product is thinner, more flexible and more crack resistant than existing glass or polyimide cover windows and stressed that it can withstand 200,000 folding actions and can be used for both fold-in and fold-out displays.
