Lina Khan, a prominent antitrust researcher and professor at Columbia Law School, was sworn in Tuesday as chair of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, in what is seen as a victory for progressives seeking a crackdown on technology companies that hold a large share of the economy.
Khan served on the House Judiciary Committee’s antitrust panel, where she worked on a groundbreaking report on alleged abuses of market dominance by Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google.
The federal government and several states are pursuing a series of lawsuits and investigations against major technology companies, with the FTC suing both Facebook and Amazon and the Justice Department suing Google.
Khan wrote “Amazon’s Antitrust Paradox” for the Yale Law Journal in 2017, arguing that the traditional antitrust focus on price was not enough to identify antitrust damages by Amazon.
Khan was the former legal adviser to Commissioner Rohit Chopra, Biden’s choice to be director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
