Lithuania’s Defence Ministry recently warned consumers not to use Chinese phones and not to buy new ones.
The statement came after a report by the National Cyber Security Centre claimed that the Xiaomi 10T Pro had censorship features while highlighting a flaw in Huawei’s P40 5G phone that allegedly put users at risk of cybersecurity breaches.
Defence Deputy Minister Margiris Abukevicius said: “Our recommendation is to not buy new Chinese phones, and to get rid of those already purchased as fast as reasonably possible.”
Investigating the problem, it emerged that the Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G phone has software that can recognize and censor terms such as “Free Tibet,” “Long live Taiwan independence” and “democracy movement.”
The report examined more than 449 terms that could be censored by Xiaomi’s phone’s system apps, and although it said the feature was disabled in Europe, the report claimed it could be remotely activated at any time.
This new update from Lithuania’s Defence Ministry comes amid growing tensions between Lithuania and China.
