Meta paid more attention to the oversight board in the third quarter than in the second

December 15, 2022

Meta’s oversight board stated that it has implemented more recommendations from its oversight board, which is tasked with assisting Facebook in answering some of the most difficult questions about online freedom of expression: what to take down, what to leave up, and why in the third quarter rather than the second.

The oversight board, which uses its independent judgment to support people’s right to free expression and ensure that those rights are adequately respected, said it received more than a quarter-million appeals from Facebook and Instagram users worldwide during the fiscal quarter ended Sept. 30.

Despite the fact that the board’s decisions to uphold or reverse Facebook’s content decisions will be binding, meaning that Facebook will have to implement them unless doing so would violate the law, the oversight board reported that 27% of its recommendations were fully or partially implemented by Meta during the third quarter, compared to 21% in the previous quarter.

One of its most recent activities was the recommendation that Meta redesign its system to exempt high-profile users from its rules, claiming that the practice favored the powerful and allowed business interests to influence content decisions. In addition, the Nigeria church attack video has been restored on Instagram.
