Meta schedules July 6 for Threads launch

July 5, 2023

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, will debut Threads on July 6. The software is intended to compete with Twitter, and users will be able to send text updates, photographs, and videos with their followers.

Threads will connect to Instagram, enabling users to use the same username and followers on both platforms, signalling Meta’s intention to use Instagram’s massive user base. It also has privacy settings for limiting post visibility.

Meta is hoping that Threads will appeal to users who are looking for a more private and curated social media experience. The company is also betting that the app will be popular with younger users, who are increasingly turning to Instagram for their social media needs.

“Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow,” the App Store description reads. “Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.”

Though Threads is closely connected with Instagram, it will be its own stand-alone app.
