Microsoft announces improvements that will reduce lag

November 4, 2022

Microsoft has announced an enhancement that will shorten the response time for Windows and Mac users of the Teams desktop client when interacting with the application, giving users a smoother experience from daily application interactions.

The enhancement improves performance for both Windows and Mac desktop users when interacting with the application. The upgraded Teams framework offers technical benefits such as faster rendering of HTML trees, faster JavaScript execution, and faster array serialization.

According to Jeff Chen, Microsoft Principal Group Program Manager for Microsoft Teams, switching between chat and channel threads is now more than 30% faster.

Microsoft said it conducted a thorough analysis of its key user scenarios, from workloads to internal audiences and A/B testing. The improved framework showed improvements across the board, particularly for the P95 metric, meaning that the experience exceeds the metric 95% of the time. Performance metrics at the 95th percentile indicate whether improvements are applicable to the majority of users, including those with low-end devices and poor network conditions.

Switching between chat threads is now 32% faster, switching between channels is 39% faster, connectivity time for meetings has improved by 21%, and response time during meetings has improved by 16%, all contributing to a smoother experience that keeps users in the flow.

Microsoft stated that the upgrade is part of the company’s ongoing focus on performance improvements and that it will continue to focus on and invest in performance optimization for Microsoft teams while appreciating feedback from customers and partners that helps us prioritize the most critical scenarios.
