Microsoft reconsiders retirement of Mail and Calendar apps

June 22, 2023

Microsoft is rethinking its plans to retire its Mail and Calendar apps for Windows after it previously announced that it would be shutting down the apps and folding their capabilities into a new Outlook for Windows.

In a note to customers, Microsoft said that it is “reevaluating the timing and implementation of this change.” The company said that it is taking user feedback into account and may be willing to reconsider its original plans.

The new Outlook for Windows is scheduled to be released next year. It will offer a number of improvements over the old Mail and Calendar apps, including better AI-powered features, a single place to access all inboxes, and greater security and organization.

It is unclear when Microsoft will make a final decision about the future of the Mail and Calendar apps. However, the company’s recent note suggests that it is open to feedback and may be willing to change its plans.

In the meantime, users who are concerned about losing the Mail and Calendar apps can continue to use them until Microsoft makes a final decision. The apps will still be available for download from the Microsoft Store through the end of 2024.
