Microsoft to initiate cloud-based Windows

August 8, 2023

A confidential Microsoft paper spotted by Windows Central editor Zac Bowden, has revealed Microsoft’s aim to move Windows 11 to a cloud-centric strategy. The Windows 365 Cloud PC innovation proposes a comprehensive Windows OS experience broadcast from the cloud to diverse devices.

Windows 365 is available in Business and Enterprise editions, with interoperability across platforms such as Windows PCs, Chromebooks, Linux PCs, and even iPads. The purpose is to improve accessibility and user experience by allowing multiple users to connect into their protected Cloud PCs, appealing to professionals who share computers such as nurses, salesmen, and contact center staff.

Users who now use Windows on their home computers may be more likely to convert to Linux if Windows cannot be operated locally. This is due to the fact that Linux is a free and open-source operating system recognized for its privacy and security features.

Furthermore, Linux is already the most used server operating system. This indicates that there is a significant pool of experienced Linux users that might aid in the expansion of Linux on the desktop. However, Linux can be more complex to install and operate than Windows. Yet, as more Linux distributions become more user-friendly, this is becoming less of an issue. There is also a scarcity of native Linux software. However, as more developers create Linux versions of their products, this is improving.
