Microsoft Will Start Testing ‘Update Stack Packages’

October 15, 2021

Microsoft recently confirmed that the company is testing a new way to improve the Windows update process with Update Slack Packages.

They will be available for testers in the Windows 11 Dev Channel starting with the latest Windows 11 Build 22478.

While details are still scarce, Microsoft representatives stated that these packages will deliver “update improvements outside of major OS updates, such as new builds,” through an update stack package, and while the update stack package is “limited to a very small set of update-related system files that are developed independently of the OS,” officials stated that the company plans to expand the scope and frequency of update stack package releases in the future.

Among the capabilities of the new feature, Microsoft stated that “the Update Stack Package will help ensure that your PC has the highest likelihood of successfully installing new updates with the best and least disruptive experience available.”

While these packages will be delivered to Insiders through Windows Update, just like builds and cumulative updates, insider testers can select the Update Stack Packages starting with build 22478 by going to Settings>Windows Update and checking for updates.
