Microsoft’s Clippy Returns As An Emoji

July 16, 2021

Microsoft’s mascot Clippy is back, but only as an emoji.

Clippy the paperclip was a simple virtual assistant who offered tips and advice from 1997 to the mid-2000s.

Clippy is to replace the existing paperclip emojis in its Microsoft 365 products, including its cloud services and the modern online version of Microsoft Office, the tech giant tweeted, but only if the tweet received 20,000 “likes.” It hit over 100,000 likes in just a few hours.

Once the change has been made, the paperclip emoji should appear as a Clippy when a user types the paperclip emoji in Microsoft products.

For Apple or Google smartphones, however, it will still look like a normal paperclip.

The original Clippy was shut down in 2001 with the launch of Office XP, disappearing from screens when it was turned off by default and removed completely after a few years
