Musk defends controversial Twitter presence

May 19, 2023

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has stayed steadfast in his decision to express his views on the social media network, regardless of the financial consequences. Musk stated this during an interview with CNBC in which he defended himself against antisemitic feelings in reaction to antisemitic charges based on a tweet against George Soros.

Musk recently participated in a Twitter back-and-forth, reiterating his criticism of Soros. Journalist Brian Krassenstein supported Soros, claiming that despite his good intentions, he is continuously assailed. In response, Musk questioned the premise, arguing that Soros’ motives are not as benign as they appear, that Soros seeks to dismantle the basic fabric of society, and that Soros “hates humanity.”

During this interview, Musk stated that he is not anti-Semitic and even considers himself a “pro-semite.” When asked about his tweet referring to Soros as someone who “hates humanity,” Musk said it was his honest opinion.

George Soros, who was born into a Jewish family in Hungary and lived through the horrors of Nazi rule in the 1930s, has been a favorite target of right-wing conspiracy theorists. These attacks frequently show unmistakable signs of underlying antisemitism.

In addition to addressing the Soros scandal, Musk used the interview to condemn working from home, calling it “morally wrong,” and to express his displeasure with technological competition OpenAI.
