Google’s Threat Analysis Group has confirmed the latest attempt by Russian hackers to break into the networks of NATO and the armed forces of some Eastern European countries.

According to the report, the attack was carried out by a Russian-based group called Coldriver, or Callisto.

The Google report describes the attacks as “credential phishing campaigns.” This type of cyber attack aims to steal user data such as usernames, passwords and credit card information using email addresses that appear to belong to trusted companies.

“These campaigns were sent using newly created Gmail accounts to non-Google accounts, so the success rate of these campaigns is unknown,” the report stated.

According to the Google report, the group has also attempted phishing attacks against several unnamed US-based NGOs, a Ukrainian defense contractor and the military of an unnamed Balkan country.

The U.S., Britain, and other European countries continue to warn organizations to strengthen the security of their networks against imminent cyberattacks from Russia.
