New Hydrogen Fuel Cell Is More Efficient Than Diesel Engine, Loop Energy

September 19, 2022

According to Ben Nyland, CEO of Loop Energy, the company’s latest cell system can deliver better fuel economy than a diesel engine at current prices. In addition, the new cell system addresses the problems of being less efficient than diesel and fueling infrastructure in Europe which is practically non-existent.

“This brings the future forward. This product delivers the economics that are needed for adoption today,” Mr. Nyland said.

Loop Energy intends to supply the fuel cell system to startup truck manufacturers as well as part of the hydrogen powertrains provided by major suppliers to large truck manufacturers.

Loop said that based on a Europe-European diesel price of $1.91 per litre on September 5 and a hydrogen price of $10 per kilogram, a truck with its new S1200 hydrogen fuel cell system could travel just over 179 kilometres on a $100 fuel, compared with just over 109 miles for a comparable diesel truck.

As the automotive industry switches to zero-emission electric vehicles, large truck manufacturers such as Daimler Truck and Volvo are investing heavily in hydrogen fuel cells to transport goods over long distances because batteries are too heavy to make electric trucks viable.
