New Mexico is using a “baby bot,” an AI-powered chatbot, to speed up the process of registering newborns in the Medicaid system. The chatbot is currently being utilized by ten hospital groups in New Mexico, as well as additional clinics and hospitals in nearby states, with intentions to expand its use.
The unique solution, developed with the assistance of IBM and SS&C Blue Prism, has cut the time it takes to register a baby to only 10 minutes, saving up substantial administrative time. Blue Prism’s technological integration is important in sending information gained from bot interactions to the state’s eligibility system, thereby expediting the performance of organized, repetitive activities.
Despite the fact that automation has reduced administrative time significantly, the state has not seen employment losses. Instead, human employees have been relieved of routine administrative tasks, allowing them to focus on more important tasks. In addition, the state intends to create new employment opportunities by recruiting developers and tech-savvy people to lead and implement future AI initiatives.
The Human Services Department of New Mexico intends to use automation in other areas, with a new mechanism in place to effectively manage returned mail.
