Notifications, Multiple App Use Causing Decline in Productivity

May 10, 2022

According to Asana’s 2022 Anatomy of Work report, notification fatigue caused by the use of multiple apps remain important factors causing productivity decline.

The report found that nearly two-thirds (63%) of U.S. workers continue to check their emails outside working hours, while 62% feel the need to respond immediately to emails.

41% of respondents said they spend more time with e-mails, and 34% said they struggle to keep up with important messages, given that workers are overwhelmed by digital activities.

According to the report, U.S. workers use nine applications a day to get their work done, but respondents said this reduced their productivity.

21% of respondents said that switching between apps makes them less efficient at their job. 19% said that this reduced attention task and 17% admitted that they work longer because of it.

Some of the measures organizations can take to address the problem of overwhelming notification include embracing more efficient meetings (52%) and ensuring clearer responsibility (48%) which could help limit the number of notifications.
