Pichai asks Google employees to help improve Bard

February 21, 2023

Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, has asked employees to spend four hours working with Bard, an AI language model developed by OpenAI, in order to make it a worthy competitor to ChatGPT.

Pichai asked that all Google employees assist in improving Bard by correcting its incorrect answers. This move is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to improve AI models so that they can compete with the best in the market. The goal is to develop a more powerful and efficient AI system capable of handling more complex tasks and producing more accurate results.

Pichai reportedly stated in the company-wide email that this is a “uncomfortably exciting” time, referring to Bard’s launch mishap. The letter also mentions, “I know this is an uncomfortably exciting time, and that’s to be expected: the underlying technology is rapidly evolving and has so much potential… Some of our most successful products did not hit the market first. They gained traction because they addressed critical user needs and were founded on deep technical insights.”

Pichai reportedly remained optimistic and said that AI has “gone through many winters and springs”, adding that the “most important thing we can do right now is to focus on building a great product and developing it responsibly.”

According to reports, the company will send a detailed plan next week. He reminded employees that Google hasn’t always been the first to release a product, but that hasn’t stopped it from winning.

Google has stated that it will include LaMDA, the underlying technology developed by Bard, in Google Search. Users will be able to search for queries and receive results based on SEO optimization. It will also include a separate chatbox with conversational results based on web results.
