Qualcomm made a number of exciting announcements at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
The company unveiled its second-generation Qualcomm 5G RAN Platform for Small Cells (FSM200xx), calling it the industry’s first 3GPP release 16 5G Open RAN platform.
The new platform offers significant improvements to RF with its support for all commercial global mmWave and Sub-6GHz bands, including the new n259 (41GHz), n258 (26GHz) and FDD bands.
As the momentum continues to grow with the FSM100xx, this next-generation platform is designed to take mmWave performance to more places around the world, while opening up new sub-6GHz possibilities with low cell density in public and private networks.
These improvements and support for the new spectrum are aimed at enhancing the mobile experience, accelerating 5G performance and availability for users worldwide, and reshaping opportunities for homes, airports, stadiums, hospitals, offices and manufacturing facilities.
Qualcomm also announced that a group of mobile phone companies around the world have pledged collective support for 5G mmWave technology, which is aimed at addressing the rapid growth in demand for user data and expanding the role of the mobile ecosystem in supporting the economic development of many vertical industries that have become a necessity in the post-pandemic world.
More than 180 operators worldwide are investing in 5G mmWave, according to GSA.
According to the company, 5G mmWave leverages abundant spectrum resources in frequencies above 24 GHz to complement the sub-6 GHz deployment and unlock the full potential of 5G.
The technology is aimed at enabling operators to equip mobile networks with enormous capacity, enabling them to deliver multi-gigabit wireless speeds and low latency connections.
These features are designed to help wireless carriers meet attendees’ daily expectations of fast and responsive connectivity and expand 5G into new ways.
Qualcomm also unveiled the new Snapdragon 888Plus 5G Mobile Platform, an evolution of its flagship Snapdragon 888. These two platforms will feature more than 130 announced or under-development designs.
