Ransomware attacks surged in June, more than doubling from the same month last year, according to new data from cyber insurer Corvus.

The report found that 456 companies were listed as victims of ransomware attacks on dark web extortion sites in June, up from 183 in June 2022. The increase in attacks was likely due to a number of factors, including the exploitation of a security flaw in the MOVEit file-transfer tool by the Russia-linked ransomware gang Cl0p.

The MOVEit breach affected over 200 organizations, and many of those victims were subsequently targeted by ransomware attacks. Even without the MOVEit breach, the number of ransomware attacks in June would have been significantly higher than in June 2022.

This year’s bump in ransomware attacks is likely due to the steep decline in attacks in 2022 following Russia’s war in Ukraine.
