September 13, 2021

Ransomware gangs have continued to expand their activities in hospitals and health organizations worldwide, despite a recent rise in COVID-19 cases.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital, a hospital hit by attacks, gave an overview into a recent ransomware attack that leaked confidential patient data online: “Though we have taken extensive efforts to protect the privacy of our information, we learned that some data was removed from certain backup systems without authorization and has been published to a website where criminals post stolen data, also known as the ‘dark web.’ Our investigation into the incident and the data that was involved, is ongoing.”

The number of ransomware gangs has continued to grow, with new gangs such as Vice Society and Hive Ransomware Group among the most notable. Several other groups have sought to stake a claim as well as number of ransomware attacks on health organizations continues to increase.
