Ransomware tagged cybersecurity industry’s biggest threat

May 1, 2023

The RSA Conference in San Francisco has tagged ransomware as the biggest threat to the cybersecurity industry.

During the RSA event, the perception of ransomware shifted from being an inconvenience to being seen as a persistent and significant danger. In May 2021, after the ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline, President Biden labeled ransomware as a top national priority and held talks with Vladimir Putin to address the problem.

The Biden administration’s cyber team was also present at the RSA Conference with a clear message about how each agency addresses the large government’s cyber role. To buttress its points, the conference was reminded that President Joe Biden’s administration has created at least three new high-level cyber positions since taking office, including the Office of the National Cyber Director, the Deputy National Security Adviser for Cybersecurity, and the Ambassador at Large position for cyberspace and digital policy.

Rob Joyce, the National Security Agency’s Director of Cybersecurity, also claimed that Russian hackers are weaponizing ransomware to attack Ukrainian logistical supply chain enterprises and organizations in Western-allied nations.
