Reddit’s API changes triggers user revolt

June 19, 2023

Reddit’s decision to charge for access to its API has sparked a user revolt, with nearly 9,000 subreddits going private in protest. The move has also led to the closure of two popular third-party Reddit apps, Reddit Is Fun and Apollo.

The changes have been met with widespread criticism from users and experts , who say they are a betrayal of the community’s trust. They also argue that the changes will make it more difficult for people with disabilities to use Reddit.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Rory Mir cautioned that social media sites must adjust their attitude or suffer decline. Mir voiced fear that if they continue on their current route, they will lose users and content. Mir also used the analogy of a balloon that can’t be inflated forever and would ultimately explode. Mir also criticized Reddit, stating that the true value of the platform lies in the content generated by its users. Hosts mistakenly believe that their hosting services alone attract users, but it is the presence of other users that truly entices people to visit.

According to Amy Bruckman, a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, the contemporary era of social media has witnessed unforeseen shifts. While it appeared for a long time that things would remain the same, a paradigm shift has finally occurred.

Reddit has defended the changes, saying they are necessary to control the flow of data being gobbled up by generative artificial intelligence companies. However, critics say the real reason for the changes is to make the company more profitable.
