Several Republican lawmakers expressed concern Thursday regarding U.S. approval to purchase chips for the growing auto parts industry from Chinese telecommunications company Huawei.

In a letter, lawmakers asked U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg if he was concerned “Huawei will search for a foothold in developing components for future vehicles in order to gather information on Americans and our transportation infrastructure.”

Last month, U.S. authorities reportedly approved millions of dollars worth of licensing applications for Huawei, who is currently blacklisted in the US.

Republican Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers said that the U.S. “must not surrender to China and its efforts to dominate our high-tech sectors, including autonomous vehicles.”

Last month, the Biden administration announced that it had not changed its policy on restricting the sale of products and technology to Huawei, a policy implemented during the Trump administration.
