Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said it had not yet made a final decision on the location of a planned $17 billion chip plant in the United States, after the Wall Street Journal reported that the company had already chosen Austin, Texas.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott will make an “economic announcement” at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the WSJ.
Williamson County, near the town of Taylor in the state of Texas, presented the best incentive package among the sites Samsung was considering, and the tech giant has also said it is considering possible locations in Arizona and New York.
The new plant will manufacture advanced logic chips for powering mobile devices and autonomous vehicles, and will hopefully expand the global inventory amid ongoing chip shortages.
Together with rivals TSMC and Intel, Samsung is expanding chip contract manufacturing in the US to compete with China.
