Samsung SDI To Build Battery Plant In Illinois

August 13, 2021

Samsung plans to build a battery factory in Normal, Illinois, according to Senator Dick Durbin.

Electric car startup Rivian has a factory in Normal and announced in April that Samsung SDI will be supplying battery cells for its vehicles.

Samsung SDI is also in talks to supply batteries that will be manufactured at a planned U.S. plant on the mainland, with manufacturers of electric vehicles such as Stellantis and Rivian, backed by Amazon and Ford Motor Co.

The South Korean technology giant is considering investing at least 3 trillion won ($2.62 billion) to make batteries for Stellantis and at least 1 trillion won to make batteries for Rivian.

According to sources, Samsung SDI has not yet made a final decision on whether to build the U.S. plant as a joint venture with automakers or as an independent production site.

Samsung SDI representatives have reportedly taken business trips to Detroit to discuss battery supply issues with Stellantis.

All parties did not comment on the matter.
