Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to hold a series of nine “AI Insight Forums” with AI experts in the fall.

The forums are intended to help senators understand the complexities of artificial intelligence before regulating it, acknowledging that a bipartisan agreement on AI legislation is still a distant goal. Schumer said he wants Congress to “approach AI with humility” and avoid making the same mistakes that were made with globalization.

The forums will cover topics include copyright, workforce issues, national security, high-risk AI models, existential risks, privacy, transparency and explainability, and elections and democracy. It will be co-organized by Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), and Todd Young (R-Ind.).

Schumer said he believes that the forums will help senators develop a “shared understanding” of AI and the challenges it poses. He also said that he hopes the forums will lead to bipartisan consensus on AI legislation.
