Many websites were down in an outage sparked by a glitch in Akamai Technologies Inc’s systems, the second major disruption linked to the cloud company in about a month.

The disruption lasted up to an hour and was due to an error in the domain name system (DNS) service, which allows web addresses to get users to their destinations. The DNS was triggered during a software update, Akamai said.

Akamai confirmed that the disruption was not due to a cyberattack and that all services had been restored after the update was scaled back.

Websites like Delta Air Lines, Costco Wholesale Corp, American Express and Home Depot were initially unavailable and showed DNS flaws in the service.

Oracle Corp and Amazon.com AWS said that the global problem related to Akamai’s network affected access to many internet resources, including their own cloud services.

Both Oracle and Amazon said their services were restored shortly after.

In June, social media, government and news sites around the world were hit by several outages, with some reports suggesting a glitch at American cloud computing service providers.

Thousands of users reported problems with websites such as Airbnb, Home Depot, Expedia and Charles Schwab, according to the outage tracking site Downdetector on Thursday.

Downdetector, which tracks outages by collecting status reports from a range of sources, said users had reported problems with 48 services, most of them within the U.S.
