Sobeys reportedly hit by Black Basta ransomware

November 13, 2022

Sobeys, Canada’s second-largest supermarket chain with more than 1,500 locations, has revealed that its grocery stores and pharmacies have been struggling with IT problems in the past week.

The Black Basta ransomware strain reportedly attacked the linked chains a week ago. BleepingComputer made the claim after viewing negotiation chats and ransom demands on Empire Company Ltd. devices.

While the company has not yet revealed any information linking the ongoing outage to a cyberattack, local media reported that Canadian provincial privacy watchdogs in Quebec and Alberta confirmed receiving confidential communications from the retailer.

Security researchers from Sentinel Labs shared details about the TTPs of Black Basta last week and concluded that the ransomware operation most likely has links to FIN7.

The extent of the attack is currently unknown.
