Square Joins The Open Invention Network Platform

September 15, 2021

Open Invention Network (OIN) announced that Square has joined its platform.

While Square uses OSS to deploy best-in-class platforms, apps and services, its partnership with OIN demonstrates Square’s commitment to patented non-aggression in OSS.

Although some argue that the scope of OIN may not match that of Square’s retail financial services and digital payment services, Square’s former CTO Bob Lee disagrees.

He argued: “Open source is part of our DNA. As a member of the open-source community — and a company that’s benefited from many open source libraries — we have a responsibility to pay it forward. We always have the mindset to open-source our code when we build.”

Commenting on the latest development, Keith Bergelt, CEO of OIN, said: “As a global leader in the effort to democratize financial services, we are pleased that Square is committed to patent non-aggression in core Linux and adjacent open-source technologies.”
