Amazon is hiring a small group of experts in its Amazon Web Services (AWS) division to monitor future threats from its cloud service.
Experts say that this could turn Amazon, the world’s leading cloud service provider with a market share of 40%, into one of the most potent intermediaries of content permitted on the Internet.
The technology giant made headlines last week for shutting down a site hosted on AWS that showed Islamic State propaganda celebrating a suicide bombing that killed about 170 Afghans and 13 U.S. soldiers in Kabul last Thursday.
The proactive approach to content comes after Amazon banned social media app Parler from its cloud service after the January 6 Capitol riot for showing content promoting violence on its platform.
Under its fair use policy, AWS already prohibits the use of its services in many ways, including illegal or fraudulent activity, incitement or threat of violence, or promotion of sexual exploitation and abuse of children.
Amazon is also actively seeking a global head of the AWS trust and safety team who would be responsible for “protecting AWS against a wide variety of abuse.”
