Facebook is coming up with a machine learning chip that will be able to handle tasks such as recommending content to users.
In addition, the social media giant has developed another chip for video transcoding to improve the experience of viewing recorded and live-streamed videos in its apps.
The social media giant’s change comes at a time when big technology companies such as Apple, Amazon, and Google, are increasingly ditching traditional silicon vendors in order to develop their own chips to cut costs and improve performance.
Facebook had previously said it was manufacturing custom chip designs specifically designed to handle AI and video transcoding to improve the performance, performance and efficiency of its infrastructure, which at the time housed 2.7 billion people across all its platforms.
The tech giant had also expressed a willingness to work with semiconductor manufacturers such as Qualcomm, Intel, and Marvell Technology to develop these custom chips because general-purpose processors are unable to handle the volume of workload that Facebook’s systems handle on their own.
Still, the report suggests that Facebook is developing these chips 100% in-house and without the help of these companies.
