U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar recently announced that she will be asking a Facebook whistleblower, Frances Haugen, a former product manager of Facebook’s civic misinformation team, who will testify before Congress on Tuesday about Facebook’s role in the January 6 attack on the capitol.
Klobuchar said she would ask questions about whether the social media giant did enough to warn law enforcement about the January 6 attack on the capitol and also about her assertion that the company’s algorithms promote harmful content.
Recall that in Haugen’s written testimony before a Senate Commerce subcommittee, she accused Facebook of putting profit before safety. She made it clear: “The company’s leadership knows ways to make Facebook and Instagram safer and won’t make the necessary changes because they have put their immense profits before people. Congressional action is needed. As long as Facebook is operating in the dark, it is accountable to no one. And it will continue to make choices that go against the common good.”
