Germany’s cartel office stated that it is investigating Google’s use of personal data and the company’s News Showcase products.
The regulator says the tech company is being investigated as it works to regulate the powers of internet companies.
“The Federal Cartel Office can now tackle concrete forms of behavior that harm competition. We have already started looking more intensively at Google’s processing of personal data and the topic of Google News Showcase,” said Andreas Mundt, President of the Federal Cartel Office.
The regulator is also drawing up plans to include other tech companies such as Amazon, Facebook and Meta in the probe.
A Google spokesperson expressed confidence that the company was in compliance.
“To the extent that changes are necessary, we will continue to work constructively with the Federal Cartel Office to find solutions that make it possible for people and businesses in Germany to continue using our products in ways that are helpful to them,” said Google.
