The US FTC dropped its antitrust case against Qualcomm on Monday without an appeal to the Supreme Court.

Acting FTC Chairman Rebecca Kelly Slaughter said she believes Qualcomm violated antitrust laws, but the commission faces significant headwinds on the issue.

The FTC initially filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm in 2017, accusing the company of stifling competition and overcharging smartphone manufacturers.

In 2019, a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California ruled in favor of the FTC, which was overturned in August 2020 by a three-member panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals, which also rejected other requests for review.

The FTC’s last option was to appeal to the Supreme Court.

In its statement, Slaughter said the agency still plans to aggressively crack down on alleged monopolies.
