Two men have been killed after a TESLA vehicle believed to be driving without a driver crashed into a tree north of Houston on Saturday night.

The 2019 Tesla Model S was travelling at high speed when it veered off the road, crashed into a tree and burst into flames after a driver error. After putting out the fire, authorities found two occupants in the car – one in the passenger seat and the other in the back seat.

The tragedy comes amid increasing testing of Tesla’s semi-automated driving system following recent accidents and as it prepares to make its software for ‘full self-driving’ more accessible to more customers.

So far, 27 investigations have been launched into accidents involving Tesla vehicles, three of which have occurred recently.
