Microsoft takes the nuclear option for data center energy needs

Microsoft has appointed Erin Henderson as the new Director of Nuclear Development Acceleration, marking a significant shift in data center power strategies. Henderson, with 13 years of experience at the Tennessee Valley Authority, will lead Microsoft’s ambitious plan to use small, modular reactors and microreactors for powering data centers.

This move aligns with Microsoft’s stated commitment to a clean and sustainable energy future.

Recently, the company collaborated with Terra Praxis, a nonprofit organization, on a generative AI model to expedite nuclear licensing and regulation processes.

As the demand for energy by data centers increases, Microsoft’s nuclear power strategy could be a game-changer in the industry, promoting cleaner energy solutions for large-scale computing needs.
