Databricks acquires MosaicML for $1.3 billion

Databricks has announced that it will acquire MosaicML, a startup that created a platform for training large language models and deploying AI tools. The acquisition is valued at $1.3 billion and will be finalized in Q2 2023.

Databricks says that the acquisition of MosaicML will help it to accelerate its growth in the generative AI market. The company says that it plans to integrate MosaicML’s platform into its own data analytics and AI offerings.

“Every organization should be able to benefit from the AI revolution with more control over how their data is used,” said Ali Ghodsi, co-founder and CEO of Databricks. “Databricks and MosaicML have an incredible opportunity to democratize AI and make the Lakehouse the best place to build generative AI and LLMs.”

The acquisition of MosaicML is the latest in a series of deals that Databricks has made in recent years. In 2021, the company acquired Monte Carlo, a provider of simulation software for data scientists. In 2022, it acquired Redash, a cloud-based analytics platform.
