Majority Of Salvadorans Do Not Want Bitcoin – Poll

A survey conducted by the Central American University (UCA) in El Salvador found that most citizens disapprove of the government’s move to introduce Bitcoin as legal tender.

Many feel that they lack basic knowledge of how to use the digital currency and distrust the project.

Some 67.9% of the 1,281 respondents said they do not agree or strongly agree with the use of Bitcoin as legal tender, compared to just over 32% of respondents who stated they agree in some way.

The study was released days before the formal introduction of the cryptocurrency as legal tender in El Salvador on September 7, a plan announced by President Nayib Bukele in June.

The UCA survey, conducted last August, also found that 9 in 10 people had no clear knowledge of Bitcoin and 8 in 10 said they had little or no confidence in its use.

In addition, 7 out of 10 believed that lawmakers should repeal the bill that makes bitcoin legal tender.
